New Secretary of State urged to prioritise self-care promotion

Like many charities dedicated to improving people’s health outcomes, the Self-Care Forum wrote to the new Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Wes Streeting MP.  Our letter offered advice and recommendations on how to increase people’s self-care practices.

People are living longer lives, but often in poor health. Therefore, prioritising self-care becomes especially urgent when it comes to preventable health conditions. According to the Office for National Statistics, around 1 in 7 deaths in the UK in 2019 could have been prevented through effective public health and prevention interventions.

Our belief is that the recommendations outlined in our letter have the potential to significantly improve health outcomes across a generation. With health and public health organisations working together to support people’s understanding and willingness to adopt self-care practises, we envisage a future where people enjoy longer lives in good health, ultimately reducing demand on the National Health Service.

As members of the Self-Care Strategy Group, the Self-Care Forum also added its name to a letter inviting the new government to realise the full potential of self-care.
